NIAGARA PARKS

The Niagara Parks Commission is a self-funded agency of the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport.  The Niagara Region offers a variety of activities including sights and sounds from the majestic Niagara Falls to Niagara wineries, theatres, festivals.  Niagara Parks attractions, like Journey Behind the Falls and the Whirlpool Aero Car, and the natural beauty of Oakes Garden Theatre are all owned and operated by Niagara Parks.

In 1885 The Niagara Parks Commission was established to control lands and buildings immediately surrounding the Canadian side of Niagara Falls known as The Horseshoe Falls. This area, which is now known as Queen Victoria Park was only 62.2 hectares or 154 acres.  Niagara Parks has grown to operate or maintain over 1,325 hectares or 3,274 acres.  This protected area is 56 kilometers long (36 miles) of natural wonders including the world famous Niagara Falls.

Niagara Parks is actually operated like it's own city within the City of Niagara Falls.  Responsibilities include police services, road maintenance and even waste collection with almost 2000 staff employed during the height of the Niagara Falls tourist seasons from April to October.  Revenues needed for this are collected through Niagara Falls attactions, restaurants, golf courses, gift shops and the many parking lots provided by Niagara Parks.
